Michael Smith, the CIO and Senior Vice President of The Estee Lauder Companies, is a respected leader with decades of experience and a positive international reputation. He’s the founder of Boma Technologies, he worked with Mylan as the Global Head of Digital and Innovation, and for over twenty years, he worked with Nike as an IT Executive. He’s also a mentor and an in-demand keynote speaker who sits on several Boards. In 2016, however, he decided to take a one-year sabbatical away from his primary professional roles to spend more time with his son.
This was one year before Michael Smith accepted his role with The Estee Lauder Companies. Mr. Smith’s decision hinged on not being able to see his son compete in the State wrestling tournament, which was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he was forced to miss due to professional obligations. This event led him to turn in his resignation and take a year off to be there for every important moment of his son’s senior year in high school so as not to miss another once-in-a-lifetime experience as a father. Read more about his decision here.
